Education, like health care, is a site of struggle and protecting and strengthening the public realm is the issue.Neo-liberal capitalist policies have decimated cities and their inhabitants beginning a new epoch in the war on youth and on working people.the struggle must be against capitalism and education must be agrand part of this struggle for without theory there is no informed practice.BestDanny Weil

Yes, Ken absolutely and this is why I posted the statistics in the article on Detroit that I did. the one about firing the union head of teachers. the statistics are alarming and with 13,000,000 million children live under the poverty level of a ridiculous 22,500 dollars for a family of four and that this number is a result of a 2.5 million children poverty increase shows that the class war will not be won in the classroom but it will be won by the support and multiracial struggles of teachers, unions, students and parents. Not sure about them today and definitely am no authority about Detroit's schools. I do, however, know that the kids with the worst scores probably come from homes that are the hardest hit economically. Conditions at home are probably less than optimal re diet, space, and support. Teachers cannot do it alone. You are right on with the crap that is hurting education today, but until income is redistributed in the economy as a whole, until the family unit is rescued from despair, all the good teachers in the world will not make any difference. The country will not be able to sustain the status quo much longer. A revolution is coming. The only question that remains is whether it will be hard or soft. Stop fighting each other and focus the blame where it belongs-- the banks and corporations that are robbing us blind.

I grew up not far from Detroit in what I believe was one of the best school districts in the country– the Flint City Schools.
