“We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When your turn comes, we shall not make excuses for terror. But the royal terrorists, the terrorists by the grace of God and the law, are in practice brutal, disdainful, and mean, in theory cowardly, secretive and deceitful, and in both respects disreputable.” Karl Marx, final editorial in the Neue Rheinische Zietung
Many Americans follow the singer-songwriter Lorde, whose real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor. Well, Lorde shocked the USA America’s music industry when she accepted her second miniature gold-colored gramophone the night of the 56th Annual Grammy Awards held on January 26, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
The astonishment was not owed to the singer-songwriter who won two Grammy awards, Best Solo Pop Performance and Song of the Year, for her hit single ‘Royals’.
It was owed to a speech Lorde delivered that was a scathing indictment of global capitalism. But, the apparent ‘live’ broadcast had a one-minute delay and was switched to a ‘rehearsal take’ that had been shot earlier. In essence, it was censored from TV but is available in transcript. So much for free ‘corporate’ press, right?
Lorde, who is from the South Pacific nation of New Zealand, initially opened her speech by stating:
“Planet Earth is run by psychopaths that hide behind slick marketing, ‘freedom’ propaganda and ‘economic growth’ rhetoric, while they construct a global system of corporatized totalitarianism” (http://snoopman.wordpress.com/2014/02/06/clipping-queen-bees-wings-lordes-real-grammy-speech-suppressed/).
But this is just a piece of it.
Here is an opening segment:
“As American journalist Chris Hedges has identified, a corporate totalitarian core thrives inside a fictitious democratic shell. This core yields an ‘inverted’ totalitarian state that few recognize because it does not look like the Orwellian world of Nineteen Eighty-four.”
You can see the speech transcript atL http://snoopman.wordpress.com/2014/02/06/lordes-suppressed-grammy-award-acceptance-speech-full-transcript-26-january-2014/).
She finally ended her speech by stating:
“Thank you so much everyone for giving a shit about our song, ‘Royals’. May you all find the balls to help construct a world based on resilient community, bona-fide freedom, and peace. To do that, we will need to redeploy the psychopaths that currently run the world to the planet’s prisons. Peace cannot happen with reconciliation. That was Nelson Mandela’s mistake. The first step to peace is justice firmly served” (ibid).

When such speeches are made by celebrities, they carry weight. That is of course why the speech was cut from the airwaves. However, for the growing elite, who world-wide have received 53% of the totality of wealth created in the last 20 years and have left a wake of inequality unequaled since the Gilded Age, it should make them shake in their Gucci boots. Consciousness is rising. And when consciousness rises so does action.
Lorde’s courage and intellect is a wonderful additive to a polluted corporate culture of commercialization and profit taking. We can only hope that Bob Dylan, who made commercial advertisements for the ‘Stupor Bowl’ had a chance to hear it.
